This time around, I wanted to associate something from your day to day life and something I know will benefit you even on the longer term. So this is the topic I came up with.
How to ask for a bigger salary a.k.a. a promotion to me seemed to be important because I am quite positive all of us have believed and knew that we deserve a higher salary based on the job we do. Also, I for one didn’t know how to ask for one, I just thought someone should offer it to me. I blame the movies and myself, to be honest. Because they teach us that things can and will be handed to us just because of our hard work. Sadly that is not true. We have to really work on that and that is why I said I blame myself. Everything I wanted to know about this topic was online or I could have asked someone about it, but I didn’t. Why?
Deep down I knew what most of you know. You didn’t want to make your boss angry or upset or make them think you are greedy and unsatisfied with your current working benefits and conditions. Well, due to all of that I did my research, I talked to a lot of people who have a voice and an opinion on this matter and I will portray some of the important features and margins on how you can make this happen.
WHY NEGOTIATING YOUR SALARY IS ESSENTIAL
Negotiating your salary is essentially a lot easier than you think. Like I said, it is actually you who is making it overly complicated in your head. Now I have to emphasize that in some companies it will be easier, while in others you will have to try harder and a few more times, but at the end of it, it is possible and it can happen. It is achievable.
Let’s start with this: Did you try to ask for a promotion before? How did it go? What was the boss’ response? And the almighty question: how did you feel during and after? Please do let me know in the comments and let’s brainstorm this together.
Now next part: It is important that I highlight just how all of this works. Learning how to ask for a promotion will not happen in one day, it comes from trial and error and it comes from you learning about yourself on the way. Why?
Because you are learning what your strengths are and what your weaknesses are, and this will not happen overnight. Maybe what you thought was your weakness will be your strength in this, or maybe going after what you want will seem harder than you would have liked to think. It is perfectly alright though. You will get there. This is a skill you will learn and will later benefit you on the long run. You will learn how to negotiate, you will learn how to assertively speak to your boss and other people and you will gain more courage to be more open to yourself about what goals you want to achieve. So this is no longer just about getting a promotion, it is about you and going after what you want and know you deserve.
So, before you rush into your boss’ office I advise you to stop and think what you want to achieve with this promotion and is it, in fact, what you actually want. What is the significance of that?
THINK ABOUT THIS: WHAT IS IT YOU ACTUALLY WANT? IS IT MORE MONEY OR IS IT A HIGHER POSITION IN YOUR COMPANY?
This is highly significant because people often think they want one but later on realize that what they have is what they weren’t aspiring to achieve. For instance, is more responsibility, more working hours, more contacts and a new status in your company what you want or is it just a few extra dollars? Correspondingly, what is the root of your needs and wants? Where do you actually want that money to go? I am asking because you need to find what drives you and to have a place where you will draw that extra motivational boost every day until you achieve your goal.
Maybe you have your heart set on a new house, new ride, or maybe you want to have a more stable economic status and not think about whether your kids will be able to go to college. It doesn’t make a difference, but all of these or one of these can and will be useful when you state your pitch to your boss.
LET’S TALK NEGOTIATION
Why? Before you can go in your boss’ office and ask for a promotion, you will need to gain more negotiation skills. So let’s begin!
What is negotiation actually?
It is a common technique by which people reconcile and mend disputes or simply attain their goals. That being said you can understand that by this I mean compromise and agreement between both sides without any argument while using assertive communication skills. The aim is to help both sides reach a joint understanding and still uphold good and durable connections.
So in order to learn negotiation skills, you can’t really jump skip to the end and think your negotiation skills are unwavering. Like with every skill it takes time, patience and practice. And also, to follow a few steps for better deliverance.
What are those steps?
- Clarification of goals
- Negotiate towards a Win-Win outcome
- Agreement and/or compromise
- Implementation of a course of action
This course of action is your base and by following this you can and will be able to build the rest of your successful negotiation upon. Also remember that settling the agreement with a compromise is not bad, because at the end of the day, both sides get to walk away happy.
Negotiation skills can be of benefit in resolving any differences that may occur between you and other people. So this is not the only time you can and will use your negotiation skills.
Now, let’s get started and see all the tricks that can help you get that promotion. And before you tell yourself that you won’t get this raise, remember why you are doing this!
This is essentially one of the most important steps. Which is why it takes #1. In order to get in any negotiation, you will need to enter that negotiation with your eyes wide open and prepared. This way, you will not lose your stepping ground or get surprised by the sudden turn of that negotiation.
So do the research. This is easy to do, as we live in a world full of technology and online marketing, and you can easily ask around or find out how much your position is actually worth in other companies or on the market in general and compare it to the one you have now. In case you are looking for a better position in your company and money is not a focus (although it is always a plus), have in mind of course all the work you have been putting in and all the hours you have dedicated to being in the office and see other people’s experiences and their journey towards promotion.
An important aspect of this will definitely be to be brutally honest with yourself about the skills and competencies you possess and how much your employer is in dire need of them. This will help with your negotiation when you enter that office or meeting room.
Also don’t forget to do the research about the person you will talk to. This will help you be prepared better and find common ground. Many successful business owners have advised that it would be best if you could go straight to the person who has the power to decide. This is important because this way you can directly state your pitch to the person who has the power to decide. So because of that, find out who is the person who has the power to give you your promotion.
Promotion negotiations are commonly known deliberations between yourself and a representative of your current company in which you aim to help yourself secure a higher position.
When you make the decision that you want to ask for a promotion, comprehend you will have to first and foremost:
Build your case, be prepared for resistance and compromise: You will need to express and prove that you are worth the position you are applying for and by that I mean give them specific examples and situations of value in which you have proven your worth to the company. Of course you can and possibly will hear a ¨no¨ at first, but that is why this is a negotiation. You are free to ask questions and have a conversation about why you are actually the person for the job. It is a common fact that salary negotiations don’t go easily and they are never an air-tight case, which is why you will need to find mutual ground. Compromise is your ally in this negotiation and of course be prepared to go back and forth during this meeting.
LEAVE YOUR FEAR AT THE DOOR
Fear often makes us mess things up and also prevent us from going after what we want. This is when your brain will take over telling you all the reasons why you shouldn’t go for it.
Of course, I understand. I mean it is scary to hear a hard no from your boss. So yeah, what if they say no?
Imagine it. C’mon. You went to a meeting and your boss said no without any hesitation. What is the worst thing that can happen out of that? You go back to your job and continue as if nothing happened. And…? Does the world end?
Let’s imagine a different scenario now. What if they say ¨yes¨ or ¨we can negotiate¨? You will come home proud of yourself, of your courage and know you actually fought for yourself. Now isn’t that an amazing feeling?!
Failure is a part of life, my friend. Yes it sucks when we don’t achieve what we wanted, but this is also an opportunity to take a look at this situation from a different angle and find a new way to do something. Your brain will actually thank you for that.
So let’s go over this again, what if they say no the first time? You accept it, change your strategy and try again with more effort, until you do get that promotion.
Failure is an opportunity to learn, it isn’t an attack on your personality and everything that you are. It is merely a momentary calamity and misfortune that can be successful the next time around.
Bottom line: they want to save money and not have to help you get into a new job since you already know yours, and you want more money and a better position with better and more responsibilities. That is where your interests collide. Remember: negotiations are about compromise and finding what scenario suits both sides most.
It is possible you will be asked about what salary would you like and why you want this promotion. The key in these questions is to strategize and not give everything away. You can be smart about it. Just say you are open to discussion based on what the job requirements are. Find out what their expectations from you would be and state how your current values and accomplishments have already proven you are the person they are looking for. This will give you enough time to think about the salary once you hear everything they have in mind.
The fact is you don’t have to give them a specific number you have in mind, although some experts say that it is better if you do so, since it shows you have done your research and prepared. Also consider that telling them your financial needs at the moment might not be the best move.
READY, SET, GO
Now, this is the last mile you have to run. You have the timing, you are prepared for the meeting, you know what you give to the company, you know why you deserve that promotion, you practiced, you know the job and its requirements, you are ready! Get in there and give it your all, you will be proud of yourself for trying.
Enjoy your promotion!
